Which airport for which resort?
Innsbruck is the closest airport to many Tyrolean resorts, such as Stubai, Axamer Lizum and Seefeld. Salzburg serves Ski Amadé, Zell am See and Kaprun. Geneva is the gateway to Chamonix, Les Portes du Soleil and Verbier, and Turin to the Via Lattea (Sestriere). Grenoble and Lyon serve the French Alps, while Verona and Bergamo are used for the Dolomites and Lombardy resorts. Sofia is the airport for Bansko and Borovets in Bulgaria, often the cheapest ski trip of all.
Some ski airports, Innsbruck and Grenoble especially, have extra winter flights, often only on Saturdays.
Ski bags, transfers and timing
- Airlines charge a sports-equipment fee for skis or a snowboard, usually per flight. Add it at booking; it costs much more at the airport.
- Book a shared shuttle or train in advance; Saturday transfer prices rise late in the season.
- The cheapest weeks are usually in January, after the New Year holidays and before the February school holidays.
FAQ
Is it cheaper to rent skis or fly with them?
For a week, renting in the resort is often similar in price to two ski-bag fees, and you avoid carrying them. If you have your own boots, bring those and rent the skis.
Which ski airport is closest to the slopes?
Innsbruck is one of the closest in the Alps, with several resorts under an hour away. Geneva and Salzburg are also well placed, with good transfers.
